Venturer Building

Design of a new assembly hall  for Robertson Central East which Babcock will initially use for the construction of five Type 31 frigates for the UK Ministry of Defence.

Location: Rosyth
Client: Robertson Central East
Cost: £TBC
Completion: 2021

Blyth & Blyth were appointed by RCCE for the C&S design of the new Venturer Building at the Rosyth Dock Yard. The Venturer building has been constructed as part of Babcocks T31 ship building programme and is designed to accommodate the construction of 2 frigates within the new shed.

The Venturer building is 145m long by 54m wide, with a design height of 40m to accommodate to overhead cranes with lifting capacities of 125 tons each.

The project was delivered by RCCE as a design and build.

Key challenges

The key challenges for the project were to ensure that the building was achieved within both the required budget and within required programme period to suit the Babcock Ship Build.

Blyth & Blyth  were appointed by RCCE to undertake a significant value engineering review of the initial concept designs for the Venturer building. This included detailed rationalization of the structural steelwork, amendments to the structural grid to reduce the crane gantry spans and the amendment to the pile types and foundation system to provide a solution that ensured the speed of construction and efficiency of design.

The works were done in a live dock environment and required detailed planning and tie ins to the existing services.

Detailed review of end user requirements to ensure that load routes and ship moving on the completed hard standing was achievable.

Results

Delivery of a high-class ship building facility to Babcock on programme for them to commence their T31 build.
