Malcolmburn Bond

Following exceptional snow falls in late December 2009 and early January 2010, a significant number of warehouse buildings collapsed at Malcolmburn Bond under snow loading. Blyth & Blyth were called in by Chivas Brothers to assess the damage that had occurred. Following detailed investigations and assessments into the extent of remedial works that would be required, a reconstruction and redesign strategy was developed to minimise the impact on the Client’s business and operations.

Location:  Keith
Client: Chivas Brothers
Cost: £50m
Completion: 2012

Working closely with the Client and Contractor, our team on site oversaw the rebuilding of 38 bonded warehouse buildings and repair of a further 31 that were badly affected by the heavy snow falls.

The rebuilding works were completed in just over 12 months with the repair and roof replacements taking a further 6 months. This is a remarkable achievement for all concerned given the logistical and complex nature of the project, particularly given that the majority of works were undertaken with the stock remaining in place. This strategy required strict controls, procedures, and management of the works given the Upper Tier COMAH Status of the site and nature of the stock being stored.
